Now a designated trout lake, Miner's Lake in Ely, MN, was at one time the site of some the richest deposits of high grade iron ore found anywhere in the world. The Pioneer Underground Mine was operated by the Oliver Iron Mining Co., owned by U.S. Steel and now is a tourist attraction displaying the dryhouse, headframe, water tank, and engine house.
