A pair of adult pileated woodpeckers are at what they do best on a warm, October afternoon. Boring huge, oval or oblong shaped cavities in standing trees then leaving huge piles of wood chips beneath the trees are their standard trademark in search for food or building a nest site. The adult males sport the red “moustache” and both male and female show the red crest with the male’s being larger, extending all the way to the forehead. These 2 were part of a family of four, even the offspring looked like miniature adults with their characteristic red crests.
